Behavioural Optometry
Behavioural Optometry is a specialised branch of practice which aims to treat beyond your visual requirements - and find the cause of the problem itself and develop a solution.
Beyond 20/20: What is Behavioural Optometry?
Most people think a "perfect" eye test means seeing the bottom letter on a chart. While clear eyesight is important, it is only one part of the story. Behavioural Optometry takes a holistic approach, looking at how your eyes, your brain, and your body work together to process the world around you.
In simple terms: Eyesight is what you see. Vision is how you understand and react to what you see.
How Does it Differ from a Standard Eye Test?
A standard eye test primarily checks for eye disease and your need for glasses to see clearly at a distance. Our behavioural optometry practices go much deeper, evaluating the "functional" side of vision:
Coordination: How well your eyes work as a team.
Stamina: Whether your eyes can maintain focus during a long day of school or office work.
Processing: How quickly and accurately your brain interprets visual information.
Who Can Benefit?
Behavioural Optometry is for patients of all ages and abilities, but it is particularly life-changing for those who "pass" a basic screening but still struggle with visual tasks.
Students & Children: For children struggling with reading, writing, or concentration, the issue often isn't compliance—it’s a visual system that is working too hard. We help ensure their vision supports their learning rather than hindering it.
Athletes: High-level performance requires elite depth perception, spatial awareness, and reaction times. We "train" the eyes to give you a competitive edge.
Digital Professionals: If you suffer from eye strain, headaches, or "brain fog" after screen use, we look at how to make your visual system more efficient and comfortable.
Neurological Recovery: For those recovering from a concussion, stroke, or head injury, we use neuro-rehabilitation to help the brain and eyes relearn how to communicate.
Our thorough examinations consider your symptoms and visual system in a holistic and proactive way - assessing more than just how you see, but instead how you process and interpret what you do see.
Comprehensive Testing
By deep-diving into your vision and other symptoms, our optometrists will be able to make recommendations which will assist in the teaming of your two eyes. This may include full-time or part-time glasses, contact lenses or eye drops.
Understanding Why
Every consultation ends with a comprehensive, long-term plan where we work together with yourself as well as others, including teachers, ophthalmologists and other healthcare providers, to enhance your child’s ability to learn and to perform.
