Wanting to take control over the progression of your or your child’s myopia?

You’ve come to the right place!

Our optometrists have worked hard to establish a myopia control clinic, based on the latest clinically-proven, evidence-based research and upcoming technology, to monitor and help slow the progression of myopia.

Monitoring involves assessing changes in visual function (and therefore prescription) as well as measuring the length of the eye (axial length) with our specialised equipment. Comparing these results to those in previous consultations is a key priority in assessing the control of myopic progression.

Alongside a decrease in distance vision which in itself is life-changing, structural changes such as lengthening of the eye and stretching of the retina increases the later risk of conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts and retinal detachments as your child gets older. For this reason, Kiddies optometrists are experts at adopting a proactive (rather than reactive) approach to your child’s myopia - to preserve their sight and future complications.

Early detection and close monitoring are key in catching the problem at the right time and our proactive approach will assist you in preventing myopia development so you can take control over your or your child’s sight.

 What is Myopia?

Myopia is a progressive condition where patients are able to see close or near work well, however distance vision is blurry.

Alongside a minus prescription, there is disruption to the normal growth and development of the eyeball - the eyeball is stretched, leading to poor refraction of what you are seeing onto your retina.

A number of factors, genetic and environmental, contribute to the development of myopia in children and adults. A family history is a known strong risk, whilst other day-to-day risk factors include an increased amount of near work, such as studying and computer or tablet-use, and decreased time spent outdoors.

Unfortunately, conventional glasses or contact lenses are often used in practice elsewhere to correct myopia, which usually leads to the increase in rate of myopia over time. Our optometrists have the tools, skills and clinically-proven resources to provide specialised treatment to myopic patients in order to be effective in slowing its progression.

At Kiddies, unlike many other optometrists, when we treat myopia, we treat more than just their vision - our goal is to stop the cause and progression itself. Instead of providing children with stronger and thicker lenses year-by-year, our proactive approach aims to slow the progression so that visual and structural deterioration is slowed and the risk of myopia-related complications is also controlled.

We stay up-to-date and ahead of the game when it comes to myopia treatment and our optometrists are consistently broadening their knowledge and expertise day-by-day to improve our patient outcomes.
